The initial phase involved the wrapping and cutting of deteriorated pipework beneath the pier. An asbestos management survey conducted by Greenair identified the sections of pipework in poor condition that required immediate attention. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was consulted, and our asbestos removal plans received their approval.
To facilitate the project, Greenair enlisted the services of AS Scaffolding, a licensed asbestos scaffolder, to erect scaffolding with stair access extending from the pier's top down to the specific work area under the pier. Throughout the project, an emergency lifeboat remained stationed beneath the scaffolding, and safety protocols, including life jacket usage, were strictly observed during setup.
Greenair Environmental brought onsite a decontamination unit and a 20KVA JCB generator, along with all necessary equipment, such as Type H vacuums, negative pressure units (NPU), CCTV, viewing panels, and 110v cables. Welfare facilities were sourced from GAP to ensure worker comfort and safety.
The removal of the asbestos contaminated pipework was carried out using the wrap and cut technique. Work was scheduled during low tide to provide sufficient clearance under the pier enclosure. Days with high tide or adverse weather conditions were closely monitored, resulting in some work stoppages.
To manage the weight and prevent manual handling issues, the pipework was meticulously cut into smaller sections. All waste materials were securely bagged, double-bagged, and removed from the enclosure in strict accordance with standard operating procedures. The waste was then routed to Greenair's dedicated 20-yard enclosed asbestos skip.
