The asbestos removal project was carried out in November 2022 for our valued client Primebuild Solution, this asbestos project was at Gairloch House 2, Gairloch, IV21 2BN in the Scottish Highlands. The asbestos works involved the removal of 50m2 of asbestos ceiling panels over a period of 5 days. The team on-site consisted of one supervisor and two experienced asbestos operatives.

As part of the police station/houses the garages were undergoing a refurbishment. AIB ceiling to both garages. Full enclosures were built. Welfare, power and water was supplied by the client. Greenair owned decontamination unit and 20 KVA JCB generator brought to site for the duration of the works along with all required equipment, ie: type h vacuums, negative pressure units (NPU), viewing panels, 110v cables etc. Mobile scaffolding was hired and delivered by Speedy. The boards were removed whole and wrapped in the pre-cut polythene and moved from the enclosure as per standard operative procedures, via the airlock to the waste compartment within the van. The drill and drill mate attachment with the type h vacuum connected were used to drill out the screw holes into the timber due to these not being able to be removed. 

What control measures were used on-site in Gairloch to reduce exposure to asbestos?

• Intact removal of AIB, the boards were unscrewed from the timber using the drill with the drill mate attachment with the type h vacuum connected.
• Greenair decontamination unit on site for the duration of the works
• Enclosure of work under negative pressure. Fully enclosed area with smoke test carried out. 2 x 2500 NPUs 
• RPE and PPE – Full face respirators, cat 5/6 coveralls, rubber gloves and steel toe cap boots.
