AIB - The AIB was to the loading bay and due to the construction we required a scaffolder to attend and fix handrails for edge protection. Hired speedy mobile tower was used to access the ceiling. Greenair owned decontamination unit and 20 KVA JCB generator brought to site for the duration of the works along with all required equipment, ie: type h vacuums, negative pressure units (NPU), CCTV, viewing panels, 110v cables etc. The AIB was fixed to the timber roof with the screw holes drilled out using the drill with the drill mate attachment. The asbestos was removed under fully controlled conditions. All waste was bagged and parcelled and double bagged and transported through the bag lock and waste route to the 40-yard enclosed asbestos skip. Skip Hire supplied by WH Malcolms. The cement roof sheets were removed using scissor lifts from One Stop Access.

What control measures were used on-site to reduce exposure to asbestos in Edinburgh?

• Shadow vacuuming and intact removal of AIB, using the drill with the drill mate attachment with a type h vacuum connected when unscrewing the asbestos from the timber and for drilling out the screw holes.
• Greenair decontamination unit on site for the duration of the works.
• Enclosure of work under negative pressure. Fully enclosed area with smoke test carried out. 1 x 5000 NPUs attached per area.
• RPE and PPE – Full face respirators, cat 5/6 coveralls, rubber gloves and steel toe cap boots.
